Rubbish, no good, terrible. In Manchester, “bobbins” isn’t a sewing tool,  it’s the ultimate put-down. “That film was bobbins.” “The weather’s bobbins.” It’s blunt, it’s funny, and it’s very, very Manc. The word comes from the cotton mills,  bobbins were the cheap, disposable spools of thread, so calling something “bobbins” meant it was worthless. A thousand years of industrial history, distilled into one devastating word.

Have it! / Go for it! The Mancunian battle cry. Shouted before attempting something ambitious, risky, or just genuinely good. Kicking a football? Av it. Going for that job? Av it. Ordering another pint? Av it. It’s two words of pure Manc confidence, the verbal equivalent of rolling your sleeves up and getting stuck in.

When a Mancunian says they're chuffed, they mean it. Not just a polite "oh, that's nice" proper, can't-stop-smiling pleased. Got a great deal? Chuffed. Your team won? Chuffed. Someone complimented your outfit? Dead chuffed. It's one of those words that sounds exactly how it feels; warm, round, and full of satisfaction. Northern understatement turned on its head: no need to play it cool when you're this chuffed.
