“Ey Up”

Hello, or watch out. The Yorkshire all-rounder; greeting, warning, and expression of surprise all in two syllables. It means “I see you, you’re alright, and we’re in this together.”

“Ow Do”

How do you do? The proper Yorkshire greeting, not a question, just a hello. Warm, no-fuss, and unmistakably Northern. It’s the verbal equivalent of a firm handshake.

“Eee Bah Gum”

An expression of surprise, disbelief, or mild exasperation. “Eee” = oh, “bah” = by, “gum” = God. It’s a cleaned-up oath that’s been Yorkshire’s favourite reaction to everything for centuries.

“Mardy Bum”

Someone who’s moody, sulky, or grumpy. “Mardy” might come from “marred” (spoiled). It’s the Yorkshire word for someone who’s having a strop said with affection, mostly. Yes, it was also an Arctic Monkeys song. That’s how good it is.

"Be Reyt"

It’ll be alright. The Yorkshire philosophy of life in two words. Stressed? Be reyt. Worried? Be reyt. Everything falling apart? Be reyt. It’s not apathy, it’s resilience, served dry.
